Summer Mental Health Tips: Finding Balance and Joy in the Sun

By Beth Warren, Associate Director of Mental Health

Summer can be a time of sunshine, vacations, and longer days—but it can also bring unexpected stress. As the Associate Director of Mental Health at LCH, I’ve seen how this season can affect people’s mental well-being in both positive and challenging ways. Here are some tips to help you care for your mental health this summer, no matter what the season brings.

1. Maintain a Routine
While summer often means a break from school or a change in work schedules, a lack of structure can lead to increased anxiety or low mood. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule, eat regular meals, and carve out time each day for self-care and rest. Even a simple morning walk or a set bedtime can make a big difference.

2. Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Heat and humidity can affect your energy levels, mood, and focus. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating balanced meals that fuel your body and brain. Dehydration can mimic symptoms of anxiety and fatigue, so this small step can have a big impact.

3. Get Outside (Mindfully)
Spending time in nature can reduce stress and improve mood. Whether it’s a walk in the park or sitting outside with a book, soaking in sunlight can boost your Vitamin D levels, which is linked to better mental health. Just remember to protect yourself with sunscreen and take breaks in the shade.

4. Set Boundaries with Social Plans
Summer is full of invitations—to cookouts, vacations, and family gatherings. While it’s wonderful to connect with others, it’s also okay to say no. Prioritize the events that bring you joy and allow yourself time to recharge between activities.

5. Ask for Help When You Need It
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or down, you’re not alone. Summer can bring its own set of pressures, and it’s okay to ask for support. At LCH, we’re here to help. Our behavioral health team provides counseling and resources to help you navigate life’s seasons with resilience.

This summer, I encourage you to care for your mental health as you would your physical health—with intention, compassion, and consistency. A healthier mind can make the sunshine feel even brighter.

If you or someone you love needs support, reach out to us at LCH. We’re here for you.
