Healing, Hope, and Humanity at LCH

Three months ago, Pedro faced one of the most difficult health scares of his life. One evening, after stepping out of the shower, he noticed his big toe was bleeding and the skin was peeling. Unsure how he injured his toe, he tried to care for the wound at home. “I was like that for a week,” Pedro recalls. “I tried to clean it, but it wasn’t getting better.”
Eventually, Pedro went to the hospital, where he received devastating news: his big toe needed to be amputated. What followed was even more alarming. After surgery, the wound wasn’t healing properly due to his uncontrolled diabetes. Doctors decided to do a biopsy, and during the procedure, Pedro went into cardiac arrest not once, but twice. “I had two blocked arteries,” he says. Pedro spent three weeks in the hospital recovering.
Without insurance and unable to work for four months, Pedro faced another battle: affording the care and medications he desperately needed. One prescription alone was priced at $6,000. “But with your help,” he says, “I am now able to afford my healthcare. LCH has been such a great support for me.”
It was through a friend of his wife’s that Pedro heard about LCH. From the moment he walked through the doors, he felt a difference. “I came to you, and I’ve had a lot of help with getting my medications, with more comprehensive and compassionate care. I guess you could say just more human.”
Pedro’s diabetes is now being managed more closely, and he continues to have his wound monitored. He receives ongoing education, support, and encouragement to stay on top of his health. “She gives me guidance on how to get my diabetes under control and what I should or shouldn’t do,” Pedro says of his provider. “At the other place I went, they would just say, ‘You’re fine, you can go.’ But here, you explain things. You give me information to take with me so I can remember what to do. You care.”
LCH has been a lifeline for Pedro. “I have more reassurance and feel certain that things are being done right when I come with you,” he shares. “The truth is, I am very grateful to everyone. They are good people at LCH.”
Through compassion, affordability, and truly human care, LCH has helped Pedro move forward, one step at a time.
